SCRIPTURE:
GENESIS 17:1–8, 15–21

BACKGROUND & CONTEXT:
In chapter 16, Sarai and Abram must have grown tired of waiting on God to deliver on his promise because Sarai suggested using a surrogate, Hagar, to deliver their promised baby. Abram agreed. But Abram and Sarai’s plan was not God’s plan, which might be why there is a thirteen-year gap between chapters 16 and 17. When God once again appears to Abram, he reaffirms his covenant with a couple of additions: circumcision and name changes.

Read Genesis 17:1–8 and discuss 1–2 of these questions:

• What does it look like to trust someone?

• What are some times in your life when you have had to trust and rely on someone else?

• Why is it important that God gave Abraham and Sarah new names to go along with his promises to them?

Read Genesis 17:15–21 and discuss 1–2 of these questions:

• When is a time in your life when you have had to trust God to provide?

• How does the birth of Ishmael prove that there were moments when Abraham didn't wait on God to do the impossible?

• How do we try to fix things on our own instead of trusting in the God of the impossible?

Read Genesis 17:1 and discuss 1–2 of these questions:

• Why was it important for Abraham to be reminded that God could do the impossible before he was told his 100-year-old wife would have a child?

• What can you do to remember that God is in the business of doing the impossible?

CONNECTION:

Julie loved learning and worked very diligently on her studies, but school was not easy for her. Despite all the time she spent on school, the results were not what she wanted. She knew getting into college would be challenging, but she believed the Lord was leading her to attend a specific university, so she applied.

After months of waiting, Julie began to doubt she would get in. She wondered if she should attend the community college for a couple of years first. She wanted to take things into her own hands instead of waiting on God.
