Second Adam, Second Life

SCRIPTURE

ROMANS 5:12–17; 1CORINTHIANS 15:45–49

BACKGROUND & CONTEXT

The first man ever created, Adam, was perfect. He had a perfect relationship with his wife. And he had aperfect relationship with his God...for a while. With one very costly mistake, Adam opened the door for sin to seep in and ruin all creation. The second Adam, Jesus, was perfect. He had a perfect relationship with God. He loved his people perfectly. With countless sacrificial choices, Jesus gave up his perfect life so we could pick it up and take on his righteousness (Rom. 3:21–26).

Read Romans 5:12 – 14 and discuss 1 – 2 of these questions:

• According to our verses from Romans, how does sin affect all of humanity?

• What gift do we receive through Jesus, and how does it contrast with the impact of sin?

• How is the hope of a second life through Jesus a source of encouragement in challenging times?

Read Romans 5:15 – 17 and discuss 1 – 2 of these questions:

• How do these passages influence the way you understand what it means to have your identity in Christ?

• Have you witnessed the transformative power of Jesus in your life or the lives of others? What happened?

• What did this lesson teach us about God’s grace?

Read 1 Corinthians 15:45 – 49 and discuss 1 – 2 of these questions:

• What are the differences between the first Adam and the second Adam, according to 1 Corinthians 15?

• 1 Corinthians 15:45 says that Jesus is a life - giving Spirit. What does this teach us about his role in our lives?

CONNECTION:

How does a second life through Jesus shape your attitudes, actions, and relationships?

APPLY IT

When we follow Christ, he changes us to look more and more like him.

What area of your life do you need Jesus to change the most?

How can you surrender that area to him this week?

Is there someone who can keep you accountable?
