SCRIPTURE

JOHN 14:15–31

BACKGROUND & CONTEXT

While the Trinity will always be a mystery to us on this side of eternity, the Holy Spirit may be the most mysterious part of the Trinity. In this passage, Jesus calls the Spirit, another Helper, and the Spirit of truth. The word “helper” here can be translated as “comforter” and means called alongside to assist. This is an excellent image to picture—the Holy Spirit comes alongside each believer and assists them in living in the truth

Read John 14:15 – 17 and discuss 1 – 2 of these questions:

• What is something that you are afraid of and why?

• Share a story about a recent challenge or obstacle you overcame and how it made you feel.

• How can you personally grow in your love of Jesus and keeping his commandments?

Read John 14:18 – 24 and discuss 1 – 2 of these questions:

• Why do you think it’s hard for us to ask for help sometimes?

• What are some areas in your life that you ask for God's help?

• What does it mean to you that Jesus is with you always?

Read John 14:25 – 31 and discuss 1 – 2 of these questions:

• What can you do this week when you’re feeling alone or scared?

• How can you come alongside someone when their fears and worries are getting the best of them?

How can you remind yourself that you are not alone when the future seems uncertain?
