Why Pray?

SCRIPTURE

LUKE 11:1–3

BACKGROUND & CONTEXT

Prayer was a powerful part of Jesus’ ministry on earth.

He prayed at his baptism (Luke 3:21). Before he chose the 12 apostles, he prayed all night (Luke 6:12). Jesus snuck away to be alone at times so he could pray (Luke 5:16; 9:18). He prayed for his disciples (Luke 22:32). Christ prayed before his arrest (Luke22:40–44) and even while dying on the cross (Luke 23:46).

The disciples couldn’t help but note the importance of prayer to Jesus, so they asked him to teach them how to do the same.

Read Luke 11:1 – 2a and discuss 1 – 2 of these questions:

• What is one thing you wished people asked you more about?

• What do you think God would say if someone asked him that same question?

• How can praying each day change the way you approach God and life?

Read Luke 11:2b – 3 and discuss 1 – 2 of these questions:

• When did you last ask another person for something important, and how did it turn out?

• How do your experiences with what you ask others for affect how you approach God in prayer?

• When Jesus said to pray “Your Kingdom come,” what might that mean?

Read Luke 11:4 – 13 and discuss 1 – 2 of these questions:

• In what ways is forgiving others crucial to understanding God?

• How might unforgiveness toward others be a factor in the way we talk with God?

• What is one action step you will take to deepen your prayer life?

CONNECTION

If everyone paused before God each day and lived out respect for who he is and what he does for us, how would the world be different?

APPLY IT

Ask a few different people you know to share a time when they changed their approach on something by going to God in prayer first, or perhaps they wish they would have stopped and prayed first.

What did you learn from them?

Be Specific:

What are you going to do?

When are you going to do it?

Is there someone who can keep you accountable?

Take time to pray for each other’s applications in the upcoming weeks.
