Why Did Jesus Have To Die?

SCRIPTURE

ROMANS 3:21–26

BACKGROUND & CONTEXT

In the Old Testament, animal sacrifices were offered to cover sin (Lev. 16), almost like a bandage or temporary fix to our massive problem with sin. But the blood of an animal could never remove or “takeaway” sin (Heb. 10:4). The annual sacrifices on the Day of Atonement served as a reminder of sins (Heb.10:3).

To perfectly remove sin, we needed a perfect sacrifice. So, God lovingly sent Jesus (John 3:16) to sanctify us (make us holy) once and for all through Christ’s perfect sacrifice (Heb. 10:10)

Read Romans 3:21 – 23 and discuss 1 – 2 of these questions:

• Because we are all guilty of sin and are incapable of removing it, how should this affect the way we see other sinful people?

• Why might some people assume we can outdo our sin with good deeds?

Read Romans 3:24 – 25 and discuss 1 – 2 of these questions:

• When have you seen someone make a significant sacrifice for someone else?

• If Jesus' death breaks us free from sin, what choices can we now make when tempted by sin?

• In what ways does the sacrifice of Jesus inspire you to make a sacrifice in your own life?

Read Romans 3:25 – 26 and discuss 1 – 2 of these questions:

• How would you explain Jesus' death to someone who's never heard about it?

• Since you have received grace and forgiveness from God, how can you extend it to others?

CONNECTION

What is one thing you have a hard time believing God is absolutely prepared to handle and help you with if you were to turn to him on it?

APPLY IT

What can you do this week to show others how grateful you are for the work of Jesus in your life?
