March Bible Study Week 3

Jesus is the Only Antidote

SCRIPTURE

LUKE 5:27–32

BACKGROUND & CONTEXT

Tax collectors were the worst, especially when the job was occupied by Jews, which Levi was. Tax collectors worked for the Roman government, which was currently oppressing the Jewish people. Because of this, Jewish tax collectors were seen as traitors working for the enemy. If that wasn’t bad enough, tax collectors were also seen as thieves. They were notorious for collecting more than they were supposed to from people and lined their own pockets with the extra. It’s easy to imagine why no one, not even their own families, like tax collectors. And yet, Jesus invited Levi to join his team.
