The Secret Sauce of Discipleship

SCRIPTURE

ACTS 8:26–40

BACKGROUND & CONTEXT

The stoning of Stephen, the first Christian martyr, must have set something off in Saul. A massive persecution against the church in Jerusalem scattered all the believers. Saul “was ravaging the church, and entering house after house, he dragged off men and women and committed them to prison” (Acts 8:3). While on the run, Christ-followers took the opportunity to spread the Gospel wherever they went. Philip wound up in Samaria, where he proclaimed the truth of Jesus in powerful ways, casting out demons and healing many. Crowds of people believed in Jesus and were baptized. Despite the incredible ministry Philip had in Samaria, God called him away to minister to one, an Ethiopian eunuch.

Read Acts 8:26–28 and discuss 1–2 of these questions:

Thinking back on this week, when did you feel a nudge from God to do something, say something to someone, go somewhere, help somewhere? How did you respond?

What role do you think personal comfort plays in our level of obedience to God?

What is an example from your life or someone you know where comfort had to be sacrificed to do the right thing?

Read Acts 8:29–33 and discuss 1–2 of these questions:

Where do you see evidence that God arranged this meeting?

Where did Philip get his boldness to run up to this man's chariot?

God opens doors like this for us today as well. When have you felt God opening a door for you to share the truth with someone?

Read Acts 8:34–40 & Matthew 13:1–9, 18–23 and discuss 1–2 of these questions:

What did Philip have to do with the condition of the Ethiopian man’s heart?

If Philip wasn't the one who could open the man's heart, what was Philip’s role in all of this?

How do you think we can put ourselves in a position to hear from the Holy Spirit like Philip did?
