As we saw in 2 Samuel 9:1–7, Mephibosheth was crippled and could not walk. When
Mephibosheth was five years old, an army invaded. His nurse grabbed Mephibosheth and fled to safety, but “as she fled in her haste, he fell and became lame” (2 Sam. 4:4). This sad, tragic story reflects our spiritual condition.
We are all spiritually “crippled” with sin. Not only could we not walk (spiritually speaking) because of sin, we couldn’t do anything because we were spiritually dead (Eph. 2:5). We had no power to make ourselves spiritually alive, let alone “walk.” Thankfully, the story doesn’t end there! Just as David fulfilled his promise to Jonathan and cared for Mephibosheth, God also fulfilled his promises by saving all who come to him.
Just as David showed Mephibosheth extravagant kindness and protection, we are shown extravagant kindness and protection by God out of the riches of his grace. God covered our sin with Jesus’ blood and invites us to his table to feast in peace with him.
