April Bible Study Week #4

Response to Betrayal

SCRIPTURE

MATTHEW 26:47–56

BACKGROUND & CONTEXT

Because they chose to make their move under the cover of darkness, the religious leaders needed someone to point out the location of Jesus and even identify him. In an act that makes the betrayal that much more traitorous, Judas chose to point Jesus out with a kiss. The fact the crowd brought swords and clubs (Matt. 26:47) only further proves they had the wrong idea of who Jesus was. There would be no revolt, no fighting back. Jesus humbly surrendered himself and did so still calling Judas friend.

CONNECTION:

Betrayal is a common theme in movies and books. You’ll probably recognize this storyline: two people are seeking a treasure of some kind, but right when it is found, one person flips and does something to ensure they’re the only one that benefits from the treasure. Maybe they’ll abandon their former
partner, turn them in to the authorities, or trick them somehow. We will betray others and God; others will betray us.

Unfortunately, it’s a theme we can’t ignore or get rid of because we’re all sinners. Thankfully, when we repent, Jesus joyfully welcomes us back, forgives us, and restores us to a right relationship with him. We must learn to do the same in our other relationships.

APPLY IT

Think of someone in your life who has betrayed you (it could be a small or significant betrayal).

How can you practically apply the example of Jesus to that situation?

MARK OF A DISCIPLE

Disciples of Christ try to exemplify the friendship of Jesus.
